Small studio at dusk under a wide wood-lined roof

Artist's Studio

A modest studio for two artists—a ceramicist and a painter—set within the landscape along the Barton Creek Greenbelt. The studio was designed to feel immersed in its surroundings while quietly receding from the main house.

The studio occupies a narrow space between the existing driveway and the Barton Creek easement, with each edge establishing a different geometry. Rather than working against those constraints, we allowed them to shape the building. A simple rectangular roof extends into the setback, while the studio volume follows the angled edge of the easement.

Untreated Corten steel clads the exterior and will continue to weather and change over time, allowing the studio to become increasingly integrated with its surroundings. Slender steel columns support the projecting roof and are proportioned and colored to echo the trees behind them. Against the landscape, they begin to read as another layer of the trees rather than a conventional structural element.

Several details connect the studio directly to the people who use it. At the kitchenette, custom handmade and hand-painted ceramic tile creates a small canvas for the ceramicist’s work. The simple interior allows these personal elements, along with the surrounding landscape, to define the character of the space.
